Frequently asked questions?
Q: How do I know if I have a 'mental health problem'?
A: You may have a mental health problem if you experience changes in your thinking, mood, or behaviour that are causing you distress or making it difficult to cope with daily life for a prolonged period. This could include extreme sadness, persistent worry, significant changes in sleeping/eating habits, or withdrawing from friends.
ThirdHand Youth Services is dedicated to the mental health of children and young people. We offer helplines for parents and professionals, provide services, information and resources to empower young people and ensure they get the support they need.
Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Everyone has mental health, just as everyone has physical health.
While we provide the direct, daily, and therapeutic care for the young person in our home , we welcome contact from families and professionals. Our ultimate goal is often to prepare the young person for reunification, which requires collaboration and communication with the relevant social work teams and, where appropriate, the family.
We offer several services, including Life Skills Development (budgeting, cooking, self-care), Education Support, and Future Planning (preparing for adulthood, independence, or reunification).
