Education Support

Working with Schools and Virtual Schools to promote attendance and achievement.

At Third Hand Youth Services, we understand that a consistent and positive educational experience is crucial for the stability and future success of young people. Our Education Support service is specifically designed to work collaboratively with schools, carers, and the Local Authority’s Virtual School to ensure every young person reaches their full academic and personal potential.

Our service provides targeted, trauma-informed, and holistic support to help young people overcome educational barriers, improve their school attendance, and boost their academic achievement.

Key Areas of Our Support

We work as a vital link between the young person, their school, their carers, and the Local Authority’s Virtual School Head (VSH) and team.

  • Improving Attendance and Engagement: Addressing the root causes of non-attendance, which are often linked to instability, trauma, and emotional well-being. We help establish routines and implement bespoke strategies to make school a safe and positive place.
  • Boosting Academic Progress: Providing targeted intervention, such as mentoring and bespoke study support, to help young people catch up on lost learning and make expected progress, in line with their Personal Education Plan (PEP).
  • Advocacy and Partnership: Working closely with the Designated Teacher in the school and the Virtual School to champion the young person’s needs and ensure their statutory educational rights are met.

Developing Essential Skills

Focused on building the executive functioning skills, self-regulation, and emotional literacy.

The Virtual School Head (VSH) is a statutory role that strategically leads on promoting the educational outcomes of Children in Care (CiC) and previously looked-after children. At Third Hand Youth Services, we align our support with the VSH’s overall aim to narrow the attainment gap for these vulnerable cohorts.
